      Hi Zara.

Science is not a 9-5 job – I work pretty much every day I need to in all honesty. Sometimes I get into work at 7am – other days 11am. Equally, I could finish work at 3pm, or work until 9pm – it depends on what needs to be done. I tend to work a lot on trains and planes – and especially airport lounges!

This is where I am really, really lucky. I have a great employer who has let me change my working hours to fit round family life. (I have a daughter who is now 9, but was just 7 months old when I went back to work after maternity leave.)

Once she started school I changed to term time only working, so when she’s on holiday I can be at home with her. And during term time I work part time, so for 2 days she does breakfast club/after school club so I can work all day, and the other 3 days I do short days at work so I can drop her at school and pick her up.

I do 5 days a week, 40 hours and sometimes an extra shift! In my job we have to cover the lab 24/7 so there are nights and weekends to be covered too!

My hours and days are a bit similar to Darren’s. One works when one has work to do. Some days I am done earlier but other days I have to work until late at night. That includes the weekends too. The nice thing is that the hours are very flexible, but you end up working much more than in a 9 to 5 type of job I think.
