I live with my partner near Manchester. We have one ginger cat called Mickey. I love to bake in my spare time, my favourite bakes are red velvet cupcakes and rainbow cakes. When I’m not working or in the kitchen, I enjoy spending time with friends going to markets, the cinema and out for meals. I love to travel with my partner Jane, either on foreign holidays, mini-breaks or weekends away in the UK. Lately we’ve been spending lots of time decorating and furnishing our first home together. I’m addicted to coffee and my favourite treat is a Starbucks coffee with a naughty treat!

I am a qualified biomedical scientist, primarily my work and qualifications are based in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Over the last few years I have primarily worked in Blood Transfusion and I love it! My job involves all aspects of a routine blood sciences laboratory and day to day I run samples to test patients ABO and Rh blood group type, and investigate to see if they have any red cell antibodies which could cause a problem if they required a blood transfusion or were pregnant. My role now includes ensuring that fridges are maintained at the laboratories and the hospitals to which we supply blood. And lots of paperwork! Ensuring all the testing is carried out in a safe and accurate way.

My Typical Day:

Typically I come in at 8am and check all the blood stock levels at the hospitals, and arrange to move units of blood if required. Run controls on the analysers to ensure they are working correctly and check the fridge temperatures are correct. Process patient samples throughout the day. Issue blood products as requested by doctors looking after the patients. Investigate any abnormal blood groups or red cell antibodies detected.
